Game Boy and the Road Trip
There are few things that will hold a child’s attention on a
road trip better than a video game. There are few games more versatile
than the Game Boy. The first models had less than perfect graphics, but
made up for it by offering a variety of games and portability – a new
step for the then-blossoming video game industry. Today, there are
several models of Game Boy available, each with its particular
advantages and drawbacks, and each with dozens of game cartridges. The
first thing to consider when purchasing games for a trip is whether
they are compatible with an existing Game Boy player. The next is
whether they are compatible with the child who’ll be playing during the
road trip.
The games available for Game Boy are as varied as for most other video
game systems. Probably the most important step to take is to carefully
read the box before agreeing to purchase a game. Just a glance won’t
tell the story of whether the game has excessive violence or some other
feature that you don’t approve of for your child. By reading the box of
most video games, you can usually find a rating that tells what age
group the game is intended for, along with a synopsis of what to expect
from playing the game. If possible, play the game before purchasing it,
especially if it’s for a child. This helps in several ways. First and
foremost, you can tell if the game really is appropriate for your
child. Next, if you’ve at least played the game for a few minutes,
you’ll be able to carry on a conversation with your child while they
play it during the road trip, meaning you won’t have to continually
look at the Game Boy to satisfy the child’s need for your participation
in their conversation.
Siblings are prone to argue about even the smallest things, and being
cooped up in a car for a road trip will usually make it worse. Like
many electronics, the cost of Game Boys have come down greatly and it’s
sometimes just a better idea to buy more than one – especially if the
trip is long and a Game Boy is a new addition.
