For a Fast-Paced Poker Game – Knock, Knock!
Most people have heard of five card and seven card stud and
draw, Texas hold’em and dozens of other poker games. Knock poker is not
nearly as common, but can provide an entire evening of fun for those
uninterested in making large bets, potentially losing (or winning)
large amounts of money and ready for a fast-paced game that the whole
family can enjoy.
“Knock” is a poker game best played with “rocks” instead of a normal
deck of card, though either can be used. Rocks look like dominoes but
instead of having dots on the face, each rock has the face of a card.
There are 54 rocks in a deck, just like a deck of cards, but knock
poker is played without one of the jokers. The only reason that rocks
become necessary for this game is that the game goes much more quickly
if shuffling and dealing are eliminated from the mix. Whether you
invest in the rocks depends on the amount of time your family will be
playing with them, but remember, these are just like a deck of cards
and can be used for any other card game.
Knock begins with each player drawing one rock with the highest card
going first. Play goes from that player to the left, just as with most
other poker games. Shuffling is easy since the rocks are all face down
on the table and are shuffled like dominoes. Each player draws five
cards. The player who goes first has the option to knock or draw one
rock and discard one. You can’t knock after you’ve drawn. The second
player has the option to take the discarded rock, draw or knock. No one
else has the option to take player one’s discard. If a player bets,
others have the option of calling or folding. The winner collects a set
amount from those who folded (usually a nickel) and a higher amount
from those who called (usually a dime). Since there’s no complicated
betting, even younger poker players can learn the rules. But remember
that, unlike most poker games, an early bluff is a good bet!
