When the Kids Want to Play a Game
With so many entertainment opportunities for children today,
it’s sometimes difficult for them to get enough physical exercise.
That’s one reason parents should make opportunities to play kids’ games
that call for outdoor activity are good for everyone, from toddlers
right through to adulthood. And what better time to plant ideas for a
healthy lifestyle than when your child is still a toddler.
Toddlers need little structure, but it’s still a good time to teach
them about kids games. Parents and kids playing “tag” is a good way to
start. Don’t worry that the toddler can’t run fast, can’t get the
concept of being “it,” and always wants to either chase or be chased.
By the time children are a little older, it’s time to start expanding
on the kids’ games and providing a bit more structure. The old
favorites never go out of style. Groups of children still love Ring
Around the Rosie and The Farmer in the Dell. These kinds of games are
especially great for kids because there are no real losers. Who can
forget games like Duck, Duck, Goose, or Red Rover? Introducing children
to those games encourages them to play with others, developing
important social and physical skills.
The habit of playing kids games with your children is one that will
easily last through adolescence, if it’s cultivated. It can provide
time for a child and parent to connect, often making it easier to
communicate during those awkward years when conversations sometimes
become stilted. By the time the kids’ games have gone from Ring Around
the Rosie to driveway basketball or street hockey, both parent and
child will have gained more than can be measured. Both will have spent
valuable time away from the television or video game. Instead, they
will have learned new skills, found out important things about each
other, and will be physically, socially and mentally more healthy. And
who would have thought it would start with afternoons playing tag with
a toddler?
